Well, right now I’m in San Francisco. I spend the last two days in San Jose, and I’ll go back there tonight after I have dinner with a co-worker.
Being here has helped me realize a couple things about my life.
First, I love Canada. This one has been done to death, but there’s so much great stuff about my country I love.
Second, I appreciate the pace of my life, both in Kelowna and in Edmonton. You’ve got the ability to ramp things up if you want, but it’s just as easy to chill out. This kind of high-powered tech thing I’ve got going right now takes it’s toll on a guy. It’s kind of fun to fly around and meet with cool people and be involved with high profile projects, but it’s also stressful and takes me away from the people in my life I love.
Third, I’m glad that I’ve got a real estate portfolio and business model that I’m really confident in. Seeing the fear people have about real estate and the stock market has made me appreeciate what I have. This includes the experience I’ve had working with my parents at Davies Management, and learned from my family’s experience investing. During lunch I met a woman from Calgary and she mentioned people’s #1 landlord fear; “I don’t want to get called at 3 a.m. for someone’s broken toilet.” I’ve had that phone call, it dosen’t worry me, and now I don’t have to worry about it.
That’s all I’ve got for now.
